Visiting and Talking with Thomas Hooton

[4]

Ebenezer Roberts not being at home; we went on to Benjamin Crispin's. Crispin not being at home; we continued on to Josiah Roberts; where we found Josiah & family at supper.- after supping a cup or two of tea with them, Josiah informed us they had just got home from the funeral of his cousin James Rowand; James he said was about 26 of age & had left but very few that was his equal in righteousness behind him &c

James was the son of Wm. & Latitia Rowand- Josiah & his wife Mary in company with their father Joseph Roberts were all the relations of the deceased from Chester meeting that attended this funeral-

The grave yard (belonging to Friends) in which he was interred, is situated out of Mount holly town, on S.E. the side thereof near the Episcopal Church (so called).

Leaving Josiah's house, we rode with him in his carriage to his Brother David's house; were invited in; where we met in company with Joseph Hooten & wife Sarah & their father Thomas Hooton, who were on a visit to David & wife Rachel H.-

It was pleasing to me, having the prospect of spending the evening of this day in agreeable conversation. I began with asking T.H. if he remembered Thoms. Adams, he said yes; he removed down country &c; the meeting house was build'd on his land; was called Adams' Meeting to; he remembers Samuel Atkinson & Ruth his widow, he thinks she was sister to Mahlon Stacy. } See Book No. 4 P 55 & the under note* (William Roberts the same year informed me the Land whereon the F. Meeting house was built was purchased of James & Esther Adams in the year 1700.

27 of 11 mo. 1823- Thomas Hooton told me he would be 90 years of age in ye middle of ye 3 mo. next..that his 1/2 brother Saml. Sharp was 4 years older- that his grandfather Thomas Hooton married Mary Lippincott ( sister to Thomas, Samuel &c- he says the House wherein he now lives with his son Joseph, was built more then 100 years ago and

I first came here with my parents (says he) I was just one year old & have lived here ever since- my father married the widow Sharp & my Grandfather removed to another place of his & so his father came here when T.H. was 1 year old as aforesd. & had by her 1 son & 2 daughs. his mother's maiden name was Haines-

Uncle Joseph Roberts said the "Hard Winter" was in 1780. the ground was frozen 4 feet deep when John Matlack was buried that winter. After hearing Joseph Warrington (tutor to Josiah & David's children) (?) also Allen Roberts and joining myself I returned about 11 o'clock.
